Ladder · A2
How a workout is programmed, delivered, coached and tracked — and the proof that the coach cannot hear you.
Area question. How is a Ladder workout programmed, delivered, coached, tracked, and progressed?
One-line answer. Ladder is a broadcast training product, not a personalisation engine: a human coach authors one 6-week series per Team, the same six workouts ship to every member of that Team every Sunday night, and the only per-user variables are which weight you pick, which exercise you swap, and which sets you tick off. The intelligence users feel is authored audio plus a retrospective history column — not an algorithm.

[VID-A] and [VID-B] are the load-bearing sources for post-paywall mechanics. Both are multi-month paying users narrating their own screens; where they and marketing disagree, they win.
1. What we found
1.1 The programming unit is a Team, and a Team is a broadcast channel
A Team = one named program + one named coach + one declared skill level + one declared
equipment set + one fixed weekly split [AS][WEB][SS-04]. 20 programs are listed on the store
[AS]; marketing says "15+ elite coaches" [WEB] and third parties say "25+" and "17" in
different months [3P] — the roster churns. ICONIC (Coach Sarah) and MOVEWELL appear in the
team-picker screenshot [SS-04] while ICONIC is absent from the current store list [AS],
and reviews name teams that appear nowhere in either list — IGNITE [REV:860,1013],
VANTAGE (Coach Brady) [REV:899], Coach Stevie [REV:359,407].
The Team detail page exposes exactly four programming facts before you commit [SS-04]:
:: Team detail card [SS-04, WEB]
What's declared up front:
├── Skill Level — "Advanced" (LIMITLESS)
├── Workout Style — "Athletic Strength and …"
├── Suggested Equipment— "Dumbbells • Barbell"
├── Designed For — prose paragraph, who it suits
└── Certifications — coach credentials
The weekly split is published per Team and is not personalised:
| Team | Weekly split [WEB] | Level | Avg length | Equipment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LIMITLESS | M Lower · T Upper×Cond · W Lower · T Upper · F Bonus Glutes · S Full×Cond · S Rest | Advanced | 45–60 min | Dumbbells • Barbell |
| ASCEND | M Lower · T Back×Shoulders · W Lower · T Chest×Shoulders×Arms · F Quads×Abs · S Full · S Rest | Int/Adv | 60 min | Dumbbells • Barbells • Machines |
| ENDURE | M Upper×Core · T Lower · W Full Cond · T Upper Definition · F Arms×Abs×Glutes · S Mobility×Core · S Rest | All Levels | 30 min | Dumbbells |
[VID-A] states the constraint plainly: the splits "are specific to the team that you've selected — they are not custom built for you, but they are a little bit more generic based on the goals of the team."
Team choice is therefore the personalisation act, and it is rate-limited by billing tier: PRO Annual = switch any time; PRO Monthly = two team changes per month [WEB]. A trial user hit the cap and churned over it [REV:26].
1.2 The macrocycle: 6-week series → 2-week "Open Season" deload
Three independent sources converge on an ~8-week cadence:
- [VID-A]: "The programs on Ladder are structured as six-week series. Each series has a specific focus and it includes specific exercises… after each series is complete there is a deload period which is called Open Season which lasts 2 weeks, and during this period you're dropping down the intensity… you also have the option to try out different teams during this time, and then once the two-week Open Season period is over you select the team you want to commit to for the next 6-week series."
- [REV:1240] (3-year user): "every 6 weeks is a new program to challenge you and grow. Followed by a 2 week De-Load week for recovery."
- [3P]: "you'll pick your preferred training style and stay in that track for 5 to 6 week blocks, which gradually get more challenging."
Corroborating artefact: the Journal workout title in [SS-02] reads "S3 Push Pull All Day" —
S3 = series 3. Series index is baked into the workout name.
Inside a series there are A-weeks and B-weeks [VID-A]: "there are A weeks and there are B weeks, so you only really do the same workouts every other week — meaning there is a little bit of repetition, but the A weeks and the B weeks help to provide some variety."
So the real template count per series is roughly 2 week-templates × 6 sessions = ~12 authored workouts, re-served three times with load and volume nudged upward. This is the single most important economic fact in this Area (hand-off to A4).
Series are also merchandised seasonally: [VID-A] names a "Sustain" holiday series in which every Team shipped at least one home/travel-friendly workout per week.
1.3 The week: six workouts, three starred, one active recovery, plus a Flex library
- Six new workouts drop Sunday night [VID-A] ("every Sunday night Ladder releases six new workouts for the week"), [VID-B] ("each week we get a new set of workouts, so there's six workouts per week"). Marketing hedges to "5+ new workouts each week" [WEB].
- Three of the six are starred "priority"
[VID-A][VID-B]— the triage path for a time-poor member. [VID-B]: "of the six workouts in the week, three have been labeled as a priority workout." - One of the six is an active-recovery day [VID-A].
- Flex workouts = an always-on library outside the plan, added ~2024–25, used on rest days
or when you reject the programmed session
[VID-A][REV:316,937,1270]. [REV:316]: "If that day the exercise on the plan is too long I can swap for a flex one that meets my time or available equipment." - Weekly coach intro video on the week's theme, plus a per-workout coach intro video on
that session's goal
[VID-A][VID-B][SS-05]. [VID-A] flags a real defect: the intro video "there's no way to scroll through the video or pause and play, so you can't see how long the video is either." - Home is a horizontal day-carousel with an M–S completion strip of ticks above it, the Team
name, and a
Change Teamslink[SS-02][SS-03]. - The weekly streak = 3 Ladder workouts in one calendar week [VID-A]; push notification fires "when your weekly streak is endangered."
1.4 Workout anatomy: named blocks → exercises → time-boxed sets
The pre-workout preview screen [SS-06] is the clearest artefact in the whole asset set:
:: Workout "PEC POWER" [SS-06]

Read-outs:
- Blocks are the unit of authoring. Each has a coach-written joke name + emoji, a duration ("2 min"), and an equipment tag ("Barbell", "Cable Machine"). A 2-minute block containing 3×30 s of bench press means the block duration ≈ work + rest for that block, i.e. blocks are time-boxed rounds. This is how supersets and circuits are expressed — as multiple exercises inside one timed block — not as a distinct "superset" object.
- Sets are time-boxed, not rep-gated. [VID-B]: "most of the exercises are timed. Either
you're given a time with a number of reps to complete, or in my case it might be as many
reps as possible in the time." The in-workout HUD is a circular countdown, not a rep
counter
[SS-02][SS-07]. - Reps descend across sets — "Reps 12, 8, 8, 8" [SS-06] — so per-set prescription, not a flat 4×8.
oris baked into the exercise name — "High to Low Cable Fly or Chest …". This is a coach-authored alternate, written into the content, and is a different mechanism from the app's swap feature (§1.8).- The
Coachcolumn carries a speaker glyph on set 1 only [SS-06]. That is the strongest available structural hint about the audio model (§1.6): coaching is attached to specific points in the timeline, not to every set. 5–6 main exercises per workout, plus a short warm-up and cool-down, sometimes guided cardio or core [VID-A]. Warm-ups/cool-downs are "quite short — you can definitely get away with adding a more extended warm-up" [VID-A]; one review calls the near-absence of stretching "almost criminal" [REV:70].
1.5 Effort % — what it is, and what it is not
Proven. Effort is a percentage prescribed per set inside the plan, present before the
workout starts [SS-06], echoed in the Journal log [SS-02], and retained in per-exercise
history [SS-08]. It is colour-ramped: 50% violet, 70–75% blue, 80% yellow, 90% orange,
100% red [SS-02][SS-08].
The decisive artefact is the history table for Romanian Deadlift (Barbell) [SS-08].
One session, four sets:
| Date | Effort | Reps | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10/10 | 70% | 12 | 50 lbs |
| 10/10 | 80% | 10 | |
| 10/10 | 90% | 8 | |
| 10/10 | 100% | 6 |
and the identical scheme repeated on 10/09. Effort rises as reps fall, within a single session.
Therefore Effort% cannot be %1RM. A 100%-effort set of 6 reps is not 100% of a one-rep max. Effort% is a coach-prescribed subjective intensity target on a 0–100 scale — an RPE/RIR concept re-skinned into a percentage and a colour, because a percentage reads as objective and requires no education. Ladder never has to know your 1RM to prescribe it, and never has to compute anything.
Operationally it is the load instruction. Ladder prescribes exercise, sets, reps-or-time,
rest, and Effort%; the member converts Effort% + the Previous column into an absolute number
of pounds (§1.9). Effort% is the bridge that lets a broadcast program feel prescriptive without
being personalised.
Not proven and parked: whether the member can edit Effort% (third-party copy describes
users "logging" effort percentage [3P], and the Journal shows it beside a Logged tick
[SS-02], which suggests editable; but every value visible in every screenshot is a clean
multiple of 5 or 10, which suggests authored). No public documentation defines the term
anywhere — not on joinladder.com, not in the App Store copy, not in either walkthrough.
Dated observation worth flagging: neither [VID-A] (Mar 2025) nor [VID-B] (Nov 2025) mentions Effort% at all, in otherwise exhaustive feature tours. It is prominent in the v4.11.0 (Aug 2026) screenshots. Effort% is most likely a 2026 addition.
1.6 The audio / voice model — Ilia's #1 question
This is the answer with the highest confidence in the Area, because a bug proves the mechanism.
There are three distinct audio layers, and none of them is generative.
Layer 1 — pre-recorded coach voiceover, authored against the workout timeline.
Marketing calls it "In-ear coaching" [AS][WEB]. What users describe:
- "quick cues on form and effort before you start each set" [3P]
- "gives reminders throughout the set of keeping good form, gives encouragement, and lets you
know when the set is almost complete" [REV:76]
- "voiceover coaching throughout the whole workout — this could include anything from form
tips to just cheering you on" [VID-A]
- style varies by coach; some are deliberately sparse: "I LOVE that it's not a continuous
(yes, 5 more, you got this) instruction… motivating words, words to help correct form, then
peace or music" [REV:133]; "The trainers don't kill me with all the positive self talk
peppiness" [REV:1010]
The proof that it is pre-recorded and slot-bound, not dynamic — a 2026 review [REV:1121]:
"Exercise swaps and voiceover don't stay in sync. If I swap an exercise, the video correctly changes to the new movement, but the audio coach continues giving instructions for the original exercise. For example, if I replace planks with bicycle crunches, the screen shows bicycle crunches while the coach is still explaining proper plank form."
The video asset is bound to the selected exercise; the audio is bound to the timeline slot. That is only possible if the coach VO is a recorded track authored for the original workout and played against the clock. It is not TTS, not per-exercise clips assembled at runtime, and not reactive to anything the user does.
Layer 2 — system / template announcements. A review complaining about the meditative sessions [REV:94-95]:
"the voice that says 'now starting flow breathing' should be removed and allow the coach to just orate the meditation."
A templated "now starting <block name>" utterance is a separate, system-generated layer
stitched between coach content. [PRESS]-adjacent reporting corroborates a machine layer:
"in-ear coaching that beeped at the start of each new exercise" and that "announced the
next move" [3P].
Layer 3 — cue tones. Beeps at exercise transitions [3P]; a "10 second countdown to finish a certain exercise" [REV:149].
Music ducking is a real, engineered feature and users name it as their favourite. Marketing: "volume control that automatically lowers the volume of your music when your coach is speaking and raises it when you're working hardest" [WEB]. Independently confirmed by users: "it'll turn that volume down while the instructor's talking and then turn it back up" [REV:544]; "when the poses switch the application lowers the music so we can hear what she is saying" [REV:721]; [VID-A]. This is the cheapest high-perceived-value mechanic in the whole product.
Mute is a first-class control, present on the workout preview header [SS-06], on the Team preview [SS-04], and in-workout [SS-02]. [3P]: "Coaching voiceovers can be toggled on or off for your preferred level of guidance."
There is no voice input. None. Across ~1.6k App Store reviews and two full walkthrough
transcripts there is zero mention of Siri, voice commands, dictation, hands-free logging, or
talking to the app [REV][VID-A][VID-B]. The interaction model is entirely touch: swipe, tap,
haptic dial [PRESS].
1.7 In-workout UX, and exactly how a set gets logged
In-workout screen [SS-02][SS-07]:
:: In-workout HUD [SS-02, SS-07]
Top — elapsed + % complete ("28:54 • 48%", "33:50 • 35%")
over a SEGMENTED progress bar; segments = blocks/exercises
Top-right— Spotify glyph · audio toggle · PiP/video toggle · coach avatar ring
Canvas — full-bleed coach demo video, looping [VID-B]
Overlay — floating 🔥 emoji = live cheers from members training now
Bottom — reps | circular countdown timer | weight (haptic dials)
Sheet — drag handle → "Goblet Squat Set 1 of 3"
Logging — the definitive description, [VID-B]:
"each workout comes with a journal and you just swipe up to display the journal on your phone as you're doing your — I usually do it in the rest breaks. Swipe up to tap into the journal and that's where you can record the reps you do, the weights you're using, any other notes… and you tick them off as done each time you do the exercise, and it keeps a running tally of your progress throughout the workout, and at the end of the workout you can tick that last button and it's 100% complete."
Cross-checked by Apple's own editorial [PRESS]: "Users log reps and volume in real time via haptic-enabled dials, with options to view their workout journal, swap exercises, add sets, and take notes."
So the mechanics are:
| Question | Answer | Source |
|---|---|---|
| How does a set get logged? | Manual tick in a swipe-up Journal sheet; reps/weight set on haptic dials | [VID-B][PRESS][SS-02][SS-07] |
| Auto-advance or manual? | A user setting. Continuous play on the built-in timer, or pause after each exercise | [VID-A] |
| Rest timers? | Built in between sets; skippable | [VID-B][REV:704,881] |
| Where does "48%" come from? | The tick-off tally — completion, not intensity | [VID-B][SS-02] |
| Per-set notes? | Yes, written in-workout, readable in future sessions | [VID-A][PRESS] |
| End-of-workout step? | Rate the session → mark complete → recorded to calendar; PR celebration if hit | [VID-A][VID-B] |
[VID-A] on the "same way you'd move through an Instagram Story" navigation: "the way that you navigate through the workout is through swiping and tapping."
Friction is real and named by paying users. [REV:1196]:
"Logging weight and reps should be easier. I don't like having to open a menu to log it. After each set a little pop up or long standing entry point should exist. Bonus points for it being on the watch."
[VID-A] reports two data-loss defects: unit setting silently flipped historical weights to kg, and "my app has just crashed on me completely and I've lost all of the weights that I've tracked for that workout."
Start Here and View History [SS-06]: View History almost certainly opens the
per-exercise analytics screen shown in [SS-08] — the exercise-name header and Effort/Reps/Weight
columns match. Start Here (with a jump-in arrow icon, shown while an exercise is expanded)
reads as "begin the workout at this exercise", i.e. skip the earlier blocks. Neither is confirmed
by a source that shows the tap result — parked.
1.8 Substitutions: four separate mechanisms, and they are the app's real flexibility
| Mechanism | What it does | Source |
|---|---|---|
Coach-authored or |
Alternate written into the exercise name itself ("Cable Fly or Chest …") | [SS-06] |
| Equipment dropdown | Per-exercise equipment selector — "Dumbbells ⌄" under the exercise title in Journal | [SS-02] |
| Exercise swap | Replace one movement, pre-workout or now mid-workout | [VID-A][REV:316,1013] |
| Workout swap / Flex | Replace the whole session with a Flex-library one matching time + equipment | [VID-A][REV:316,937] |
[VID-A] on swap: "the swap option which allows you to swap out an exercise if you'd rather not do it or if you don't have access to the equipment that's required — I've swapped lat pulldowns with chin-ups… or Smith machine squats for regular squats… and something that's great that I actually just realized today is Ladder recently released the option to swap exercises mid-workout; before you could only swap it before the workout began."
Swap is also the de-facto equipment adapter: [VID-A] runs a gym-programmed Team at home with only 5 and 10 lb dumbbells by swapping every machine/barbell movement to dumbbell and raising reps. Coaches additionally give verbal alternates: "using dumbbells instead of a barbell for deadlifts" [3P].
Two defects in swap. The VO desync of §1.6 [REV:1121], and [REV:50]:
"When attempting to swap one workout for another it seems to work about 70% of the time. The other 30%, it'll completely disappear causing you to not track any of the reps but the app will still go through those workouts."
1.9 Progression: the app never prescribes a weight
The app prescribes: exercise, sets, reps-or-time, rest, Effort%. The user prescribes: the load.
- [VID-B], unprompted: "I'm choosing the weights that I feel comfortable with. I'm not overloading myself too much, and I can always tone it back if I need to — and I think that gives me a little bit more control over how hard I work."
- [3P]: coaches "provide alternative moves and dumbbell weight suggestions for beginner, intermediate, or advanced levels" — a verbal three-tier hint inside the recorded audio, not a computed number.
What the app does instead is show you your own history at the moment of decision. Three surfaces:
Previouscolumn on the pre-workout table — "60 lb" against each upcoming set [SS-06]. "When you see that exercise again, Ladder will automatically populate the weight you used last time" [3P].- Mid-workout Journal lookback — [VID-A]: "you can use this journal feature to go back and see the weights that you've lifted in the past for either the exercise that you're currently doing or a similar variation, and that can help you decide on the weight to lift for that particular day."
- Per-exercise analytics [SS-08]: Total Volume / Total Reps / Avg Weight / PR tiles, a monthly volume line chart, and a full Effort-coloured history table.
There is no auto-regulation. No source — marketing, Apple editorial, either walkthrough, or
any review — describes the app changing next week's prescription based on what you logged. The
progression engine is (a) the authored series getting harder across six weeks, and (b) the user
nudging load upward because the Previous number is sitting in front of them. [3P] states the
user-side loop bluntly: "challenge yourself to lift heavier or add reps each time."
The volume chart in [SS-08] is consistent with this: a step function — flat plateaus at ~2k, ~3k and ~4k lb with discrete jumps between them — which is what you get when a human bumps dumbbells to the next size, not what a % auto-progression would draw.
Retrospective reward, not prospective control. End of workout: PR congratulation + a bar graph + "a percentage increase from when you first started using the app till now" [VID-A]; [PRESS] frames the promise as "push past plateaus, lift a little heavier each week, and rack up a steady stream of personal records."
What happens if you skip a day — two sources that need reconciling: - [VID-A]: "during the week you can complete these workouts in any order… even though it might say that your lower body workout is scheduled for a Monday, maybe you're not feeling it that day and you instead want to shift that workout to the Friday." - [REV:92]: "When I have to skip Tuesday and then do that workout on Wednesday, you mark in the app as if I did Wednesday's workout, which is not correct. I would love for this to be changed to instead show priority and other workouts rather than specific days."
Both true: the week is an unordered set of six, but the calendar record is date-bound, so the day labels are cosmetic and the completion log misattributes. Nothing reschedules, nothing catches you up, nothing re-plans. Missing a workout costs you the streak (3/week) and nothing else.
1.10 Tracking surfaces and Volts
Journal is both the in-workout logging sheet and the standalone history tab [SS-02][VID-B].
Header shows Total Volts ⚡1,450 [SS-02]. Per-exercise rows carry the equipment dropdown,
a Weight ⌄ unit control, and a Logged checkbox column.
Lifetime aggregates the app computes [VID-B]: number of workouts, number of minutes trained, total amount of weight lifted. Plus badges for workout count, minutes, weekly streak, cheers sent, and holiday workouts [VID-A].
Volts — largely unevidenced, and that is itself a finding. Total Volts ⚡1,450 in the
Journal header [SS-02] and a ⚡4 badge on the profile avatar with a partial yellow ring
[SS-02][SS-03] are the only concrete evidence. The term appears nowhere in ~1.6k App
Store reviews, in either walkthrough, or on any joinladder.com page we could read. Public search
surfaces only TikTok "what do Volts mean on Ladder app" discovery pages — i.e. users are
confused too. Best-supported reading: Volts is a 2026 points currency accrued per completed
workout, sitting on top of the pre-existing badges/streak layer, and the Rewards bottom-nav
tab [SS-03] is where it lands. The one documented spend channel is adjacent, not proven
identical: referral credits "toward the Ladder store" [VID-A]. Parked — hand to A5.
Also unresolved: a blocks-icon badge on each day card reading 1582 [SS-03] and 720
[SS-01]. Either Volts earnable for that workout or a count of members who completed it.
Parked — hand to A1/A5.
1.11 Integrations, and where they actually stop
| Integration | Claimed | What users show |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch | HR + calories + zone; BPM 89 / MAX HR 56% / CAL 210 / ZONE 1 [SS-08][WEB] |
Widely praised [REV:404,416,677,878]. But "the heart rate doesn't reflect the Apple Watch" [REV:2], and you cannot log weights/reps from the Watch [REV:1196] |
| HealthKit | "integrates with Apple Health… track every workout metric" [3P] | Steps read into the app [REV:316,878]. Write scope unverified |
| Other wearables | — | None. "I cannot use my Garmin watch" [REV:742]; "wish I could pair my heart rate monitor and Whoop cadence sensor" [REV:680] |
| Spotify / Apple Music | Ducking during coach speech [WEB][SS-09]; onboarding step 3 of 3 with a SKIP [SS-09] |
Ducking confirmed by many [REV:544,721,1312]. One dissent: "The app doesn't actually connect to Spotify, it just opens it" [REV:2]. One user names YouTube Music [REV:523] |
| Offline | "downloaded" state on the workout detail [SS-05]; "download workouts for offline use" [WEB] | "Ladder lets you save workouts for offline use, so you can train even without Wi-Fi or service" [3P]. Scope (video only vs whole session) unverified |
| Non-Ladder activity | — | Cannot be logged. "if you want to introduce a 30 min stair master in your tracking, you need a different app… which defeats the purpose of one app" [REV:53]; running distance must be typed in manually [REV:2] |
| AirPlay / cast / TV | — | No evidence found. The [SS-07] top-right glyph looks like a PiP/video toggle, not a cast target. iPhone-only, no iPad build [AS] |
1.12 Testing note 4: is the exercise library light on barbell basics?
Barbell basics exist, are named, and are tracked as first-class objects with PRs. Direct evidence:
| Movement | Where |
|---|---|
| Bench Press (Barbell) | 3x Bench Press inside block "Bench Blaze 🔥 · Barbell" [SS-06] |
| Romanian Deadlift (Barbell) | Own analytics page, PR 100 lb, 187 logged reps [SS-08] |
| Barbell back squat | Coach mid-squat under a loaded bar on the "Lower Body Strength" day card [SS-03]; again in [SS-02] |
| Bent Over Row | In-workout HUD, 135 lbs [SS-02] |
| Incline Dumbbell Press, Goblet Squat, Seated Lateral Raise, High-to-Low Cable Fly | [SS-06][SS-07][SS-02] |
| Lat pulldown, chin-up, Smith machine squat | [VID-A] swap examples |
So the flat claim "there are no basics" is not supported. But three structural facts make Ilia's experience correct, and they matter more than the library inventory:
- Exposure is gated by Team choice, and most Teams are not barbell Teams. Of the 20 listed programs [AS], only ASCEND ("barbells, dumbbells and machines"), RESILIENT ("Kettlebell and barbell"), LIMITLESS ("Dumbbells • Barbell") and TRANSFORM ("heavy lower body work") point at a bar. THRIVE is explicitly "dumbbell-only"; ENDURE's suggested equipment is "Dumbbells" [WEB]; ALIGN/DEFINE/EMBODY are Pilates/yoga hybrids; BODY & BELL and RESILIENT are kettlebell-led. A member on THRIVE or ENDURE will see zero barbell work, ever.
- The split is bodybuilding-shaped, never lift-shaped. "Lower Body / Back × Shoulders / Quads × Abs / Arms × Abs × Glutes" [WEB] — there is no "squat day", no "bench day", no main lift with a session built around it. The organising unit is a muscle group.
- The container is hostile to heavy low-rep work. A basic lift arrives as an ingredient in a
2-minute, emoji-named, time-boxed block —
3x Bench Press · 30 sec · Reps 8, 8, 8[SS-06], i.e. 90 seconds of bench inside a 2-minute window. Sets are timed, sometimes AMRAP-in-time [VID-B]. Nothing in that structure supports a 5×5 with three-minute rests.
Conclusion: the basics are present but they are not the spine. They are seasoning inside a high-density, high-variety, high-tempo circuit format optimised for a 30–60 minute session and for content novelty. And reviews confirm novelty is the loved property, not consistency: "Killer workouts and not doing the same thing over and over" [SS-10]; "The complexities of the exercises and unique combos keeps me interested" [REV:881]; "I like that it's 'new' each week… I tend to drop programs if I get bored" [REV:986]. Nobody in ~1.6k reviews asks for more barbell basics. The only near-miss asks for more at-home alternatives [REV:35].
Verdict on Ilia's notes 1, 2, 4
Note 1 — "удобная навигация для трекинга (можно однако лучше голосом)" → CONFIRMED, and sharpened.
The tracking navigation is genuinely well-built: a swipe-up Journal sheet you open during rest,
haptic dials for reps and weight, a tick per set, a live completion percentage, notes per
exercise, and the previous weight pre-populated [VID-B][PRESS][SS-02][SS-06][SS-07]. Multiple
reviews single it out as the reason they stay [REV:347,1010,1114,1357]. Ilia's parenthetical is
also correct on both halves:
- Voice would be better, and it does not exist. Zero evidence of voice input, dictation, Siri,
or any hands-free logging anywhere in the corpus [REV][VID-A][VID-B].
- A paying user independently asks for exactly the fix Ilia implies, in a review: logging
"should be easier… I don't like having to open a menu to log it… Bonus points for it being
on the watch" [REV:1196]. The Apple Watch companion displays HR/CAL/ZONE but takes no
logging input [SS-08][REV:1196].
This is the sharpest opening surfaced by this Area: the one interaction that happens 15–25 times per session, while your hands are on a barbell, is the one Ladder has left on touch.
Note 2 — "Голосовое сопровождение" → CONFIRMED, and now characterised.
Voice guidance exists and is a top-cited strength. Its mechanism is now known and it is
unglamorous: pre-recorded, per-coach voiceover authored against the workout timeline
(§1.6), layered with templated block announcements ("now starting flow breathing" [REV:94-95])
and cue beeps [3P], and mixed over the user's own Spotify/Apple Music with automatic ducking
[WEB][REV:544,721]. Toggleable [3P][SS-06].
Proven pre-recorded and slot-bound — not TTS, not runtime-assembled, not reactive — by the swap desync defect: swapping an exercise changes the video but the coach keeps cueing the original movement [REV:1121]. Which means the perceived "coach in my ear" is a content asset, not a system: expensive to produce per Team per series, and brittle the moment the user deviates.
Note 4 — "Сама подборка упражнений, нет базовых (точнее мало, они смиксованы)" → REFINED. The second clause is right; the first is too strong.
- "нет базовых" — not supported. Barbell bench press, barbell RDL (with its own PR page),
barbell back squat and bent-over row are all present and tracked
[SS-02][SS-03][SS-06][SS-08]. - "точнее мало" — supported, but the cause is Team selection, not library depth. Only ~4 of
20 programs declare a barbell; THRIVE is dumbbell-only and ENDURE is dumbbells-only
[AS][WEB]. Your barbell exposure is decided at signup, by a quiz, and is capped afterwards by tier (Monthly = 2 team changes/month) [WEB]. - "они смиксованы" — strongly supported, and it is deliberate. Basics are ingredients inside
2-minute, emoji-named, time-boxed blocks alongside cable flies and lateral raises [SS-06];
days are named by muscle group, never by lift [WEB]; sets are timed or AMRAP-in-time
[VID-B]. Ladder is not trying to build a strength spine — it is optimising for a
novel-feeling, dense, finishable 30–60 minute session, because novelty is what its members
praise
[REV:881,986][SS-10].
Net: Ilia has correctly identified a design choice, not a gap. Ladder trades a strength spine for content novelty. Whether that is a weakness is a positioning question for the Brief, not a finding.

3. Reconciliation notes
a. "Any order" vs "wrong day credited." [VID-A] says the six weekly workouts can be done in any order; [REV:92] says doing Tuesday's session on Wednesday gets logged as Wednesday's workout. Both hold: the week is an unordered set, the day labels are presentation, and the completion record is date-stamped. Resolution: the calendar is a display grid, not a schedule engine. No rescheduling, no catch-up, no re-planning.
b. Deload length. [VID-A] "Open Season… lasts 2 weeks"; [REV:1240] "a 2 week De-Load week". Same claim, awkward phrasing in the review. Treated as 2 weeks, two independent sources.
c. Series length. [VID-A] and [REV:1240] say 6 weeks; [3P] says "5 to 6 week blocks". Adopt 6 weeks, with [3P] read as imprecise paraphrase.
d. Program count. [AS] lists 20; [WEB] says "15+ elite coaches"; [3P] says "25+" and
"17" in different sentences; [SS-04] shows ICONIC which [AS] does not list; reviews name
IGNITE, VANTAGE and Coach Stevie, none of which appear in [AS]. Conclusion: the roster is
churning and no single count is current. Hand to A4.
e. Spotify. [WEB] claims seamless integration with ducking; [REV:2] claims "it just opens it". Ducking is corroborated by at least three independent users [REV:544,721,1312] and [VID-A], so the ducking is real; [REV:2] most likely describes playback control (there is no in-app player, the app hands off to Spotify). Recorded as: ducking yes, in-app playback control no.
f. Effort% recency. Absent from two exhaustive 2025 walkthroughs, prominent in Aug-2026 screenshots. Treated as a likely 2026 addition, not as a long-standing mechanic. Same reasoning applies to Volts.
g. [SS-08] tile arithmetic does not close. Total Volume 4.9K lb ÷ 187 reps ≈ 26 lb/rep, but Avg Weight reads 60 lb. Either the tiles cover different windows or these are marketing mock numbers. The tile labels are evidence; the tile values are not.
h. Coach-audio quality is contested. Overwhelmingly praised [REV:76,133,872,1114,1117,1312] but one 1-star review calls it "a voice giving very bad cues… and an AI body mimicking the exercise from bad angles" [REV:8]. The "AI body" characterisation is contradicted by every other source and by the screenshots (real coaches, real gyms). Recorded as an outlier, not evidence of synthetic demo video.
4. Open Questions / Parked
Post-paywall or undocumented; not inferred.
- What Effort% formally means. No definition published anywhere. Is it % of max effort, proximity to failure, or a coach-internal convention that varies by Team? Whether the member can edit it. Whether it feeds anything downstream. → Resolvable only inside the app.
- Volts. Earn rate, whether it is per-workout or per-volume, what a Volt buys, whether the
Rewardstab is a Volts store or only referral credits, relationship to badges and streak.[SS-02][SS-03]only. → A5 owns; A2 needs the earn-side rule. - The
1582/720day-card badge. Volts earnable, or completion count.[SS-01][SS-03]. → A1/A5. Start Heresemantics. Reads as "start the workout from this exercise"; no source shows the tap result.- Rest-timer specifics. Are rest durations prescribed per block, per set, or global? Is rest configurable? [VID-B] confirms they exist and [REV:881] that they can be skipped; nothing shows the values.
- Superset / circuit as a first-class object. Blocks are time-boxed containers [SS-06], but nothing proves whether Ladder models an A1/A2 superset pairing or just sequences exercises inside a timed block.
- How A-weeks and B-weeks differ mechanically. Different exercises, or same exercises with different set/rep/Effort prescriptions? [VID-A] says only "you do the same workouts every other week." This is the crux of how progressive overload is actually authored.
- What changes between series 1, 2, 3 of the same Team. Whether load prescription is anchored to the member's logged history at series boundaries, or purely coach-authored. This is the single highest-value unanswered question in the Area.
- Offline download scope. Video only, or full session including audio and the plan?
- HealthKit write. Does a Ladder workout appear as an Apple Health/Fitness workout, and are HR/calories written back?
- Whether the per-set 🔊 glyph is tappable. [SS-06] shows it on set 1 only. Is it an on-demand "replay the cue for this set" control, or a passive indicator that a cue exists there? A tappable per-set cue would be a materially different (and better) audio model.
- Exercise library size and taxonomy. No count published; no evidence of a browsable exercise library independent of workouts. Swap candidate lists are presumably filtered by muscle group and equipment — unproven.
- Whether swapping affects the plan going forward or only that one session.
- The onboarding quiz → Team mapping.
[WEB][VID-A][VID-B]confirm a quiz on goals, experience, activity level and equipment exists; how it maps to a Team is A3's.
5. What this does NOT cover
- Onboarding, quiz mechanics, trial design, paywall, pricing tiers. → A3. Noted only where a tier limits programming access (team-switch cap).
- Gamification as a retention system — badges, cheers, wall selfies, forums, leaderboards, Rewards store, coach chat / "elite membership". → A5. Covered here only where a mechanic attaches to training (streak = 3 workouts/week; Volts earn side; cheers rendering in-workout).
- Content production economics — how many coaches, how a series is filmed, per-series audio and video cost, roster churn. → A4. This Finding hands A4 a hard number to price against: ~2 week-templates × 6 sessions ≈ 12 authored workouts per Team per 6-week series, each with a full coach voiceover track, per-exercise looping demo video, a per-workout intro video and a weekly intro video.
- Nutrition, meals, water, macro logging (v4.11.0's headline feature [AS]). Not training.
- Chat, community, Coach Pins. → A5.
- Design system, IA, navigation shell, tab bar. → A1.
- Business, funding, scale, revenue. → A6.
- Ladder's implementation stack. Cut by SCOPE.
- Android. Cut by SCOPE. iPhone-only, no iPad build [AS].
- Whether any of this is a good idea for Ilia's product. Out of scope by design — the openings this Area surfaces (voice logging, Watch-side input, absence of auto-regulation, no strength spine) are stated as facts about Ladder, not as recommendations.
